I have always had a big passion to contribute in the communities that I live in since as far back as I can remember. It’s with this ambition that I set out to pursue the Miss Uganda crown in 2008, knowing at the back of my mind that with that platform, I would have a bigger voice to affect those pressing issues in our society. So from the start I set out to build a legacy of compassion in the different communities where we have successfully managed to reach out and extend our support. It’s always been my goal to share the little that I have with those in need and to make a difference not only during my reign but even after.
I remember one day being asked by a journalist, “what I would do as the current Miss Uganda and what would I accomplish by the end of my reign.” My answer then came in the words of Helen Keller, “I cannot to everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do the something that can do.”
Personally I believe it is better to focus on a few issues because that is the best way to have great impact. I chose to focus on issues that personally affect me as a woman and mother living in a 3rd world country. Daily we are faced with a lack of adequate health services, something that leaves a number of women and children facing big risks.
My experiences as a mother have enlightened me on a number of issues facing maternal, newborn and child health in Uganda. It’s for this reason that I tend to look at most situations facing mothers, newborns, and toddlers from a personal point of view. For each issue that we focus on as a foundation, we find innovative ideas that could help us contribute to the wellbeing of all women and children in our society.
I believe that if we pulled all the resources available to us, we could offer greater support to the many underprivileged mothers, newborns and toddlers in urban and rural Uganda.
I am convinced that we do have the capacity as a Foundation to make the desired difference in our society today with financial and logistical support from the various stakeholders. We will create communities where every mother and child gets the chance to live a healthy, long and productive life.
